Julião Sarmento is a multimedia artist and painter. He studied Painting and Architecture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. As an interdisciplinary artist, throughout his career, Sarmento has worked with a wide range of media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, video, performance, sound, and installation, as well as developing several significant site-specific projects. Sarmento’s work addresses issues such as the complexity of interpersonal relationships, psychological interaction, sensuality, voyeurism, and transgression. Over the last 50 years his work has been exhibited all over the world, in solo and group exhibitions. Sarmento represented Portugal at the 1997 Venice Biennale. He was featured in documenta 7 (1982) and documenta 8 in Kassel (1987), and at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 2002. His work is included in numerous public and private collections.
