Colombo, Via della Spiga, presents a collection inspired by Memphis Milan.
September 2016 – The post-modern Memphis movement continues to represent an inescapable form of inspiration: Colombo Via della Spiga has created a collection which takes and re-elaborates colours shapes and expressions typical of the post-modern scene of the 1980s.
The wooden sculptures by Ettore Sottsass are the starting point for the Fall/Winter collection by Colombo VDS, paired with the poetic beauty of the “albino” crocodile and the minimalist and pure shapes of Anish Kapoor and Donald Judd, mixed with the stylistic codes of the brand: linear and iconic shapes, high quality materials and extraordinarily skilled craftsmanship.
To highlight this connection between Colombo, the historical Milanese brand, and the Memphis movement the boutique in Via della Spiga will host a selection of the movement’s cult pieces during the forthcoming Milan Fashion Week.
The star will be the iconic bookcase Carlton by Ettore Sottsass, positioned in the window to tell the story of a journey in which shapes and colours borrowed from the world of design have given rise to a contemporary collection of accessories where attention has been paid to every detail. The Carlton, a composition of superimposed geometric shapes and bold colour combinations has a strong identity that made it an icon of the movement in time. Colombo has worked with Memphis Design to create an installation, Memphis “Tribute to Milan” in the boutique in Via della Spiga with a careful selection of design pieces.
“I am particularly proud of this collaboration which brings the world of design close to the world of Italian-made luxury accessories,” comments Alberto Bianchi Albrici, owner of Memphis. “Colombo is a long-established Milanese brand which has been able to take features and inspiration from the Memphis movement and translate them with extraordinary skill into real works of art in leather. The proof is the obvious close relationship between the new models that can be seen in the Colombo boutique and the Memphis spirit,” concludes the entrepreneur.
The new Fall Winter collection by Colombo has a soft and natural line, both in terms of the leathers and of the colours: for the first time, “oiled” Crocodile has been used, with a soft texture that joins the “semi-oiled” version with a matte effect, the “wrinkled” effect of deer leather, nabuk and hand-grained calfskin and lastly, touches of ayers and stingray.
The metal fastenings become mirrored deep black, with rubberized finishes with the characteristic “touch” and the iconic black and white “Memphis” finish, exalting shapes and modernity.
The new collection comprises 6 models, which join the iconic New Wall Street, La Scala, Adelia and Hard Clutch.
The Memphis Clutch in particular is a model from the new collection connoted by a strong 1980s’ inspiration. A small clutch with a precious chain, a central metal fastening recalls the Totems of the Memphis movement and the iconic Colombo C-shape.
